According to Merriam Webster, the verb hype is a transitive verb and it has two main meanings. The first one is
2: INCREASE
So simply put, hype means to excite.
By that deduction, hype songs are songs that excite and make you feel pumped up. Full of energetic melodies and catchy lyrics, beat drops, and cool vocal range, those songs carry you through your day, the hour, or even through your 20-minute workout (that Chloe Ting arm thingy is hard, okay?). They may even give you the sudden urge to start running up and down, to appreciate life, or even to start dancing in the living room naked (haha not speaking from personal experience).
In any case, hype songs keep you company and help you get through when you desperately need energy.
In the mystical age of 2021, hype songs are easily found in the media, whether they are encompassed in trends, movies, series, or apps. Moments later they get stuck in your head, and here you are, stuck mumbling them, unable to remember where did you hear them and why do they smash so freaking much. Hype songs are hidden everywhere.
Yet here I am helping you discover five hype songs, and remind you why they are hype and where did you hear them. These should definitely hype you up. If not, they will get stuck in your head. If not, you can always check them out. If not, why on earth did you click on this article?
And before going any further I have to put a disclaimer. I am sure that there is probably a theory behind those songs. Something about the keys, the notes, the music, the melody, the melody, the chorus. Yet, I quit music when I was fifteen and I was never even the least talented at that. If you have a theory behind these songs, I will be glad to hear it in the comments. And don't forget, music is subjective. Everyone's opinion is different. Here is mine.
1. Broken Boy-Cage the Elephants
Why is it Hype? Listen to it and you will understand why.
Where did you hear it? Invincible-Prime Amazon
OK! OK! Don’t shoot the messenger! I know most of you are like “What is she talking about? This song is an alternative.” BUT THIS SLAPS. In fact, the whole album "Social Cues" by Cage the Elephant is a masterpiece. It even won the Grammy for the Best Rock album (not that having a Grammy means anything. I'm still trying to get over that Lorde’s Melodrama did not win Album of the Year).
“Broken Boy” was on the top of many Spotify lists in 2019, having climbed charts and critics’ lists. Now it is back, returning to billboard due to its appearance in the adult animation series Invincible. The protagonist Mark Grayson gets his powers in the first episode (It is not a spoiler, it literally happens within the first 20 minutes). Then the spectators are witnesses to one of the best flight scenes in animation, wherein the background song Broken Boy” is playing. You see this scene, you hear this song, and once the episode is done, you want to start running, hollering “I’m a broken booooooy, I’m a broken boooooooy.”
I’m kidding. You will want to see the next episode. The show is awesome.
2. Slumber Party- Ashnikko (ft. Princess Nokia)

Why is it hype? It self-empowering.
Where did you hear it? Tik Tok
The song is part of Ahnikko’s demi mixtape “Demidevil”, and follows the fate of the other songs in her mixtape, which is to be part of many tik tok trends. Whether girls are showing their glow-ups or their breakups, home renovations, or room decorations, this song accompanies their short videos. Besides, all of Ahnikko’s songs are catchy hits. She and Doja Cat are now the queens of Tik Tok.
What is more, this song has climbed to many Spotify lists as well. OUT? Top of its list. Viral songs? Constantly climbing. Pop list? It is everywhere. If you haven’t heard it, just open Spotify.
3. Non-stop- Hamilton artists
Why is hype? Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda
Where did you hear it? Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda

I don't need to say anything more. Every song that is part of the Hamilton musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda is amazing. For those that you don't know, Hamilton is a rap musical that narrates the tumultuous life of Alexander Hamilton, an American Founding Father. He was "an immigrant, bastard, son of a whore" that wrote his way out of poverty and ended up on the ten-dollar bill. The Musical won many accolades, and it is now considered one of the consequential of Broadway history due to its minority casting and well-written rap songs. You can watch it on Disney+ or listen to the Musical’s album on Spotify.
But why did I choose this song in particular? The song "Non-Stop" concludes Act 1 of the play. It contains elements of all the other Act 1 songs such as "Helpless," "Satisfied," “ My Shot” and many more. Moreover, the song mentions every theme in the play such as hard work, Hamilton’s pride, the American Dream, and writing. In other words, it is a summary of the musical. I care so much about you dear readers, I found a way to cheat your way out of a musical. Listen to this song, and you get the gist of the whole play. You hear it once, and you want to work non-stop yourself. It will hype you up.
4. Montero (Call Me by Your Name)- Lil Nas X
Why is it hype? It is original and catchy
Where did you hear it? Tik tok and on the news. It caused a lot of backlash.
“Call me when you want, call me when you need” to hear that amazing song (see what I did there?). According to Insider’s Moises Mendez II, the song is partially inspired by the 2017 film “Call me by your name” and his own experiences as a gay person. The song was condemned by religious groups and conservatists as it was deemed too explicit. Yet, the real reason was the video clip, where Lil Nas X goes to hell while pole-dancing, lap dances the Devil, and in the end, kills him. It is an experience. I know. It is also awesome, so watch it. However, the song also has a deeper meaning for the members of the LGBTQ community. As Philip DeFranco said in one of his recent videos, this song exemplifies the fear of LGBTQ people that because they love someone they will go to hell. Nevertheless, Lil Nas X Uno-reverses this fear and shows that yes, gay people will go to hell on their own terms. They are unapologetic about themselves, and they have nothing to fear. In fact, they can even seduce the devil and rule the place. Besides, their only "fault" is love. And love is the biggest power of all. (… And I got cheesy. Sorry, I guess).
5. Anybody feat. Nicki Minaj
Why is it hype? Because it is Nicki freaking Minaj
Where did you hear it? Literally everywhere.
I know it has been a tik tok meme. I know I am not being original.
BUT DID THEY LIE THOUGH?
I challenge you, dear readers. Find me one song that features Nicki Minaj that does not hype you, that you haven’t hummed or danced at wildly at a club. The woman is controversial, but all artists are. I mean, Cardi B copied her, and look how successful she has become. But she is the one original trend-setter.
Some examples are:
Doja Cat: “Say so” feat. Nicki Minaj. Iconic
Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj: “Bang Bang”: Showstopping
Ty Dolla $ign – “Expensive” (feat. Nicki Minaj)? Captivating
The adjectives are weird but you get the point.
Her back hurts because she literally carries every song she is in. And she does it to hype you up. So do my queen a favour and listen to her music.
