Some people are shy, some people are communicative, some other people can’t stand crowded places, some people are meant to talk in public in front of thousands of people…You can bump into many different types of people but once you step foot in the workplace everyone should put aside their fears and habits. Everyone has to build and reach the same level of communication with their colleagues.
Why is that of such an importance? I will tell you why. But first take a moment and think. How the place you spend most of your time at every day would have been like without any communication?
In a company, in an office, in a bookstore, in a factory, in a supermarket, in a coffee shop, in any workplace communication is required for better results. Let’s represent a given situation where there is an argument between two colleagues in one of the departments of a company or an important medicine is short of supply in a pharmacy. How will both of these problems be solved if the employees don’t talk to each other, share their opinions and suggestions for the best possible solution? Throughout communication their chances are gradually rising.
Now, if we speak about an ordinary day when deadlines, responsibilities, team projects etc. are on the table you still have to develop a decent communication with your colleagues. Ten or twenty or hundred brains are always more effective than one brain. The ideas are flying all over the place, the pair of hands are doubled, tripled or even tenfold which immediately leads to faster results. Furthermore, there are times when you are in need of a second opinion about your work and the only one who can offer it is your colleague. So if you have been barely talking to each other they may even not want to help you as we know how competitive a person can be when claiming for a higher position.
Sometimes we just need a person who we can frankly talk with during a rough work day. Pouring out our soul, letting them know what challenges we had to recently meet, asking and giving some advice…Just having people we trust and can comprehend our pressure at work as they are the only ones who are actually experiencing the same obstacles in the working environment. Having a shoulder you can lie on any time in the workplace is a priceless privilege.
Since we have discussed the importance of communication in a workplace it’s time to move things forward and provide you with actual help in developing effective communication with your colleagues. I suggest you purchase the book: “Effective Communication at Work: Speaking and Writing Well in the Modern Workplace” by Vicki McLeod, from Amazon. Besides the fact that it mentions with details why it is crucial to have good communication in a workplace it also focuses on HOW to build one. Buy it, browse it carefully and the outcome will knock at your door in no time… You just have to open it and absorb it all.
