Jewels are trending. And not the single, old-fashioned diamonds and pearls of the past, but collections of many blocky, modern accessories to be worn all at once. Beads and colors are back, and in full swing.
Exhibit A: these jewels worn by TikToker Sienna Gomez:

Despite this dramatic return to a hipster, almost early 2000s trend in the world of accessories, there is one fashion taboo that remains controversial, to say the least: silver and gold together. Most of the women and girls I’ve met throughout my life have tended to classify themselves either as more into silver or golden jewelry. I always struggled to confine myself to this idea. Can one not be into both? Can I only wear my favorite pieces at different times? Was going out in both gold and silver jewels tacky? Fortunately, after years of trial and error, and some research, I like to say I’ve mastered the art of wearing silver and gold at once. So, without further ado, this article is here to settle the debate once and for all:
Mixing jewelry metals is no longer the major fashion fail it used to be. However, there are still some things to avoid. Ideally, the pieces you choose should accentuate each other in some way; maybe they are matching styles, coordinate with other parts of your outfit, or at least have the same vibe. Here are some ideas of how to achieve this:
1. Figure out your style: The best way to make sure none of the components of your outfit clash is to know the look you’re going for. If your clothes are more casual, go for simpler jewels, and vice versa.
2. Make sure there is a balance: Does your handbag have a bright golden strap? Add a few more silver pieces, maybe a longer necklace, to make sure the metal is able to stand out. If you are looking for a contrast between the pieces, it’s important to include at least slightly even amounts of each.
3. Layer pieces with similar themes: Find a pattern. Since the metals will differ from each other, focus on jewelry with similar themes, designs, or sizes. Layer necklaces starting from the smallest to the longest. Wear rings that complement one another, and so on.
4. Look for bridge pieces: One easy way to make the metal mix work is by including a bridge bijou--that is, one that has both silver and gold. This will help accentuate the other accessories by acting as a central piece they are all coordinated with.
5. Limit the metal shades you use: While it’s okay to mix different metals as you wish, it’s a smart idea to pick a few shades to stick to. Rose gold and a lighter silver, for example, complement each other well and would give you an elegant, more subtle vibe. Adding yellow gold and bright silver to the mix would likely clash.
6. Don’t be afraid to add colour. While metals clash easily, adding trinkets with solid colors can easily bring together a look. Keep your shades of metal limited, but don’t be afraid to spice up your accessories with white necklace, or rings with colorful details. Here is another example via Sienna’s instagram:

Consider this myth officially busted. Whether you're going for a casual, classy, formal or elegant vibe, mixing and matching metals can work to your advantage. Moreover, although this article includes some suggestions, remember: the biggest fashion faux-pas is not being yourself! Don’t be afraid to experiment and get to know your own style. Trends come and go, but authenticity is always going to be in.
