In the fast paced world we live in today, we have access to products, clothing, makeup and just about anything you could want in a simple click. What we fail to educate ourselves about is what happens behind that one click, and the impact your new shirt or pair of shoes have. The new popularity around online shopping and mass consumption may seem like advancements to our society, but what we don’t realize is that it is actually destroying our planet!
Our privileges should not mean we turn a blind eye to what is unjust. Now you may be thinking what can I do or what does this have to do with me, right? Every time that you buy from any of these brands you are supporting companies that profit off of exploiting child labor, dumping toxic wastes into our rivers and contributing to a climate crisis that we are currently in! Instead, by buying from alternative companies that are environmentally friendly and ethical, we are shifting the success from the companies that are harming our planet.
These are some of the most unethical and environmentally harmful brands we should stop supporting:
1. Shein
I know, this one’s a tough one, I used to love shein too. Sadly, shein’s business is based on copying other brand’s work and posting fake pictures on their websites, deceiving their consumers to gain profit off of underpaid workers. They way that they make their clothing too, is very environmentally unfriendly which is why all their prices are so low.
2. Nike
This one’s a tough one to swallow, but Nike is actually one of the worst brands to buy from. According to Greenpeace, Nike uses toxic chemicals in their production, which is harmful to the workers and hazardous to the environment. Also, taking into consideration Nike’s mass production of around 2 million shoes a day, can you imagine the scale of the damage this company alone is causing the planet?
3. Fashion Nova
Fashion nova is extremely unethical in its labor conditions, animal welfare and environmental impact as rated by Good on You. It was rated one of the lowest ratings among many other brands.
4. Lush
Lush may seem environmentally friendly, organic, with their natural ingredients and much more but this is called “greenwashing” to confuse the consumers. Lush actually uses synthetic chemicals known to be harmful to humans.
It is our responsibility to help our planet and with a few changes in consumption choices, we can have an impact!
